Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional facilities across Lagos, in a move aimed at reducing overcrowding and improving the state’s justice system.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the development was confirmed by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, who explained that the decision is part of ongoing efforts to reform correctional centres and ensure better conditions for inmates.

According to him, the governor exercised his constitutional powers under the prerogative of mercy to grant freedom to the selected inmates, even though some had not completed their sentences.
Pedro noted that the beneficiaries were carefully chosen based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, following established legal procedures.

He also recalled that a similar exercise took place in December 2025, when 91 inmates were released as part of the same initiative.
The latest release, he said, reflects the government’s commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law, while also addressing the persistent challenge of congestion in correctional facilities.
