- Tinubu Criticises Atiku Over Privatisation Record
- Specifically referenced Atiku’s role as chairman of the National Council on Privatisation
- Raised concerns about the current state of key industrial assets, including the Ajaokuta Steel Company and other steel projects
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has criticised opposition figures over their roles in Nigeria’s past economic reforms, taking aim at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over the country’s privatisation programme, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking at a Renewed Hope Agenda meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu questioned the outcomes of privatisation efforts carried out during the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo.

He specifically referenced Atiku’s role as chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, the body responsible for overseeing the country’s privatisation process at the time.
“The head Atiku was the chairman of the Privatisation Council of Nigeria at one time,” Tinubu said.
The President also raised concerns about the current state of key industrial assets, including the Ajaokuta Steel Company and other steel projects.
“They privatized the steel industry in Delta, is it working today? They privatized Ajaokuta, is it working today? Go on the list,” he said.
Tinubu further criticised what he described as the broader impact of the reforms, suggesting that the expected benefits have not materialised.

Atiku, who served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007, chaired the National Council on Privatisation under the Bureau of Public Enterprises, which supervised the sale and concession of several government-owned enterprises during that period.
The latest remarks signal renewed political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with economic policy and past reforms emerging as key points of debate.
