The Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Olutunji Disu, has ordered immediate disciplinary measures against officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking during a press briefing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the police chief described the incident as a serious breach of professional conduct, stressing that it does not reflect the values of the Nigeria Police Force.

Disu said the officer at the centre of the incident, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, violated established procedures and Force Order 247, which regulates the use of firearms by officers.
“The action was criminal, unprofessional, and has no place in the Nigeria Police Force,” he stated.
According to the IGP, all officers linked to the incident were immediately transferred from the Delta State Command to Abuja, where they underwent internal disciplinary proceedings. Investigations conducted by the Force Disciplinary Committee and the Orderly Room Tribunal confirmed misconduct and breaches of operational rules.
He disclosed that both bodies have recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other implicated officers, alongside their prosecution for unlawful homicide. The recommendations have since been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval.
Disu emphasised that the actions of the officers were individual violations and not representative of the institution, reiterating the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct.
“No uniform is a license to kill,” he said, underscoring the commitment of the police to uphold the rule of law.
The IGP extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice would be pursued transparently and diligently.
