EKO HOT BLOG reports that Argentina famously recovered from an opening defeat to win the 2022 tournament in Qatar, while Spain also went on to become world champions in 2010 despite losing their first game in South Africa.
However, World Cup history has also produced the opposite scenario, where countries exited the tournament without suffering a single defeat. Draws, goal difference, and penalty shootouts have cruelly ended campaigns for several nations that remained unbeaten throughout the competition.
Here are 10 countries that were eliminated from the World Cup without losing a match.
10. Republic of Ireland
The Republic of Ireland impressed at the 2002 FIFA World Cup despite the controversy surrounding Roy Keane’s exit before the tournament. The Irish side drew against Cameroon and Germany before defeating Saudi Arabia to qualify for the knockout stage. Their campaign eventually ended after a draw with Spain in the Round of 16 before losing on penalties.
9. Switzerland
Switzerland progressed from the group stage unbeaten at the 2006 World Cup after victories over Togo and South Korea, alongside a draw with France. Their journey ended in the Round of 16 after a goalless draw against Ukraine before losing in a penalty shootout.
8. Costa Rica
Costa Rica shocked the football world at the 2014 World Cup by topping a difficult group containing Uruguay, Italy, and England. The Central Americans later defeated Greece on penalties in the Round of 16 before another 0-0 draw against the Netherlands ended in a shootout defeat in the quarter-finals.
7. Belgium
Belgium failed to advance beyond the group stage at the 1998 World Cup despite remaining unbeaten. Draws against the Netherlands, Mexico, and South Korea were not enough to secure qualification.
6. New Zealand
New Zealand were the only unbeaten team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The All Whites drew against Slovakia, Italy, and Paraguay, but still exited the tournament in the group stage due to an insufficient points tally.
5. Cameroon
Cameroon went unbeaten at their first-ever World Cup appearance in 1982. The African side recorded three draws against Peru, Poland, and Italy but were eliminated on goals scored, while Italy progressed and eventually won the tournament.
4. Scotland
Scotland also exited the 1974 World Cup unbeaten. The Scots drew with Yugoslavia and Brazil before defeating Zaire 3-0, but failed to qualify for the knockout stage because of goal difference.
3. England
England avoided defeat throughout the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. However, draws against West Germany and hosts Spain in the second group stage prevented the Three Lions from reaching the semi-finals.
2. Italy
Hosts Italy enjoyed a strong unbeaten run at the 1990 FIFA World Cup before their dreams were shattered by Argentina in the semi-finals. After a 1-1 draw, the Italians lost on penalties but later secured third place in the tournament.

1. Brazil
Brazil remain one of the most notable unbeaten teams to fail to win the World Cup. At the 1978 tournament in Argentina, the Seleção did not lose a single game but were eliminated in the second group stage on goal difference by eventual champions Argentina.
