Shock and tension spread around the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Sunday after a part-time student of the institution was reportedly shot dead inside his vehicle near the main entrance of the Ugbowo campus.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the incident, which occurred under unclear circumstances, has triggered concern among students and residents in the area.

Videos circulating on social media showed the aftermath of the attack, with sympathisers gathering around the victim’s vehicle shortly after the shooting.
Although reports claimed the student had just finished writing his semester examinations before the incident happened, authorities have yet to officially confirm the details surrounding the attack.

Reacting to the development, the management of University of Benin expressed sadness over the killing and appealed to students and staff members to remain calm and security conscious.
The institution also clarified that preliminary indications suggested the incident may be connected to suspected cult-related activities outside the university environment.
University authorities further assured members of the campus community of their commitment to maintaining security and ensuring academic activities continue peacefully within the institution.
As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the incident.
