The Lagos State Government has disclosed that it has disbursed about N900 million in grants to support research, innovation and startup development across the state.

According to Alake, the Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council has so far provided grants to 80 researchers and 75 startups as part of efforts to strengthen innovation, technology and scientific advancement in the state.
He added that the council had already processed over 240 applications under the 2026 grant cycle, reflecting growing interest in research and innovation support programmes.
The commissioner also revealed that 6.46 million residents have been enrolled under the Lagos Identity Card Project.
He explained that the figure includes over 4.058 million adults and about 2.407 million children captured in the database.
Alake described the identity card initiative as a major tool for effective governance and improved public service delivery under the state government’s THEMES Plus Agenda.

According to him, the framework is designed to create a unified data system that allows different government agencies and partners to operate independently while leveraging a centralised infrastructure for information sharing and service coordination.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, stated during the briefing that the ministry did not renovate any public secondary school libraries despite records in the 2025 budget performance document indicating that more than N300 million was allocated for the rehabilitation of libraries across the state.
The budget document had earlier indicated that 70 public secondary school libraries were rehabilitated for N232.6 million, while another N100 million was reportedly earmarked for completion works under phases one and two of the project.
Sule, however, disclosed that the Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, was advancing plans for the establishment of a University of Medicine and Health Sciences.
According to him, the proposed institution is aimed at addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals in Lagos and across Nigeria, especially amid the increasing migration of doctors and other medical workers abroad.
He said the institution would help increase the training of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to bridge existing manpower gaps in the healthcare sector.
