Rivers United have confirmed that several players and officials sustained minor injuries after the club’s team bus was involved in a road accident while travelling for their President Federation Cup Round of 16 clash against Nasarawa United.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side disclosed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday, stating that the accident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed its camp en route to Awka, Anambra State.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that despite the accident, the club assured supporters that there were no fatalities or life-threatening injuries.
“We wish to inform our supporters, stakeholders and the general public that the team contingent was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for the President’s Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United,” the statement read.
“The safety, health and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority. We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition.”
The incident sparked concern among supporters and members of the football community, prompting an outpouring of prayers and goodwill messages for the team.
Rivers United expressed appreciation to fans, stakeholders and well-wishers for their support following the unfortunate development.
The club added that further updates regarding the team’s travel arrangements and the status of Saturday’s President Federation Cup fixture would be communicated in due course.
The accident comes at a critical stage of Rivers United’s season. The Pride of Rivers booked a place in the Round of 16 on Monday after securing a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Rangers International.
Having narrowly missed out on the NPFL title after finishing second on the table, the President Federation Cup now represents the club’s final opportunity to end the campaign with silverware.
Rivers United concluded the 2025/2026 league season with 67 points, one point behind eventual champions Rangers.

Their Round of 16 opponents, Nasarawa United, are awaiting the fixture in Awka as uncertainty remains over Rivers United’s immediate travel plans following Thursday’s accident.
