Preparations for the inaugural National Intermediate Games gathered momentum on Wednesday as officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) concluded an inspection of sporting facilities across Lagos State ahead of the competition scheduled for September.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the inspection tour, led by the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, assessed the readiness of key venues that will host athletes from across the country during the first edition of the Games, a competition designed to nurture young talents and strengthen the pathway from grassroots sports to elite performance.

One of the major facilities visited was the Teslim Balogun Stadium, where extensive renovation works are ongoing. The upgrade includes the installation of a new playing turf and the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure to meet modern sporting standards.
Project contractors assured the delegation that the renovation remains on track and that the stadium will be fully completed before the commencement of the Games.
The committee also inspected indoor sports facilities, basketball courts and other designated venues expected to accommodate various events during the tournament.
Speaking on the state’s preparedness, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering a successful competition that will leave a lasting impact on sports development in Nigeria.
According to the governor, the Games represent an important platform for young athletes to showcase their abilities while reinforcing Lagos’ reputation as a leading destination for major sporting events.

Sanwo-Olu further praised the leadership of the National Sports Commission, noting that its current reforms and strategic direction are helping to reposition Nigerian sports for sustainable growth and international competitiveness.
In his remarks, Olopade expressed satisfaction with the level of work completed so far and commended the Lagos State Government for its dedication to hosting the event.
He noted that Lagos has consistently demonstrated the capacity to organize large-scale sporting competitions, citing recent international events successfully hosted by the state.
The NSC boss described the National Intermediate Games as a critical component of the country’s long-term athlete development strategy, emphasizing that the competition would serve as a bridge between school and grassroots sports programmes and the elite level.
He added that the commission remains encouraged by the collaboration between Lagos State and other stakeholders involved in delivering the competition, expressing confidence that the maiden edition will establish a strong foundation for future editions.
The National Intermediate Games is expected to bring together emerging talents from different parts of Nigeria, providing them with a platform to compete, develop and advance their sporting careers.
