The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has paid a condolence visit to the palace of the late Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty, Oba Babatunde Akran.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Dabiri-Erewa was received by the Regent, chiefs and members of the royal family, where she conveyed her sympathies over the monarch’s passing.

She described the late traditional ruler as a visionary leader whose reign was characterised by peace, steady progress and meaningful contributions to the socio-economic and cultural advancement of Badagry and Nigeria as a whole.
The NiDCOM chairman particularly commended the institutionalisation of the Badagry Door of Return Festival, noting that the initiative strengthened Badagry’s position as a symbolic destination reconnecting Africans in the diaspora with their ancestral roots.

According to her, the monarch’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage and deepening diaspora engagement would remain a lasting legacy.
Family members and palace chiefs expressed appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining cordial relations between the palace, the people of Badagry and NiDCOM.
During her visit to Badagry, Dabiri-Erewa also inspected the site of the Door of Return, currently under construction. She praised Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, for approving the construction of a permanent structure, describing it as a landmark tourism project aimed at strengthening cultural ties and reconnecting the historic African diaspora with the continent.
