The woman had just purchased food and was crossing the road when the bus hit her, throwing her across the carriageway. Both the bus driver and the FRSC vehicle reportedly failed to stop at the scene, leaving her critically injured. She was pronounced dead by the time police officers from Utako Division arrived.
“The woman came very early, went to buy food, and was crossing near the Total station when officials of the FRSC were chasing a commercial coaster bus at high speed. The bus hit her and threw her to the other side. Neither the driver nor the FRSC vehicle stopped,” said Johnson, an eyewitness.
Another local eyewitness noted that such high-speed chases are common in the area, but warned that previous incidents had not always resulted in fatalities due to fewer pedestrians on the streets.
“The incident happened this morning around the NNPC area, opposite the Total filling station. The coaster bus and the FRSC vehicle were moving at high speed. The bus hit the woman and continued. Neither vehicle stopped,” the witness said.

Felix Theman, FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, confirmed that the Corps is investigating the incident. Patrol teams in the area have been recalled to determine if any FRSC vehicles were directly involved in the chase.
“We are currently investigating the matter and verifying the facts. Once our investigation establishes the details, we will issue a press statement,” Theman said.
“There are instances where vehicles are assumed to be patrol units, even if no official patrol is in progress. Some pickups are used for purposes other than regular patrol, and offenders sometimes mistake them for chasing vehicles.”
The investigation aims to clarify the role, if any, of the FRSC in the tragic incident and to establish accountability.
