- Former Big Brother Naija housemate Queen Mercy Atang has detailed her experience behind her viral bread dress worn at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
- The reality television star sparked massive social media conversations after appearing at the prestigious industry event in a highly unconventional gown constructed entirely from 500 individual loaves of fresh bread.
- Clarifying the origin of the Avant-garde piece during an interview with the BBC on Saturday, May 23, 2026, Atang explained that the complex structural concept was birthed and executed by celebrity fashion designer Toyin Lawani of Tiannah Empire.
The media personality described the structural weight of the culinary garment as an intensely painful physical experience, stating that the sheer load of the baked goods nearly fractured her waistline during the final fitting sessions.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Atang revealed that the massive pressure from the internal skeletal framework left a severe abrasion across her back, causing her to break down in tears during her initial attempt to wear the gown.

She recalled that the immediate physical strain forced her to strip off the dress within seconds to catch her breath and stabilize her posture before gathering the emotional stamina to re-wear it for public presentation.
According to her, the bread dress was intended as subtle promotion for her business, an idea suggested by her stylist.
Atang admitted that she originally had no plans to participate in the 2026 AMVCA ceremonies, having channeled her resources and personal schedule toward alternative corporate investments.

However, her resident creative director adamantly discouraged a simple or understated appearance, convincing her to embrace a high-risk fashion statement that would permanently capture the attention of the entertainment industry.
Despite arriving at the venue long after the official red carpet exhibition had closed, the reality star maintained that physically entering the main hall was absolutely necessary to validate the authenticity of the performance art.
Atang noted that she refused to restrict the project to digital lookbook uploads, fearing that cynical internet users would immediately dismiss the intricate craftsmanship as an artificial intelligence fabrication.
She concluded that while she anticipated a wave of polarized public feedback, the explosive global news syndication and heavy press coverage that followed the appearance completely exceeded her expectations.
