El-Rufai’s criticism was prompted by Daniel Bwala, a presidential aide, who questioned the former governor’s newfound criticism of the APC-led government.
Bwala suggested that El-Rufai’s vocal opposition might be linked to not being offered a role in Tinubu’s administration.
In response to these implications, El-Rufai clarified that he had never sought a position within the government and would have maintained his critical stance on the party’s issues regardless of his involvement in the administration.
He accused some people of being paid to defend the government online, no matter what it does, calling them “political mercenaries.”
El-Rufai’s criticisms have fueled talk that he may leave the APC. His supporters see him as a truth-teller, while his critics believe he is trying to weaken the government he once helped build.
