- Atiku condemned the court ruling on the NDC’s registration
- He accused Tinubu of trying to weaken opposition parties
- He also urged the judiciary to resist political interference
Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has criticised the court decision overturning the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alleging that the development reflects an effort by President Bola Tinubu to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that Atiku made the remarks after the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, nullified its earlier judgment of December 10, 2025, which had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.

Justice Isah Dashen ruled that the Peace Movement Party should have been joined in the case because the outcome directly affected its interests.

In a statement issued by the Atiku Media Office, the former vice president said the ruling did not come as a surprise, describing it as part of a broader attempt to undermine multiparty democracy and create conditions for a one-party political system.
He warned that denying Nigerians the opportunity to participate in free, fair and credible elections could threaten the country’s democratic stability and lead to serious political consequences.
According to Atiku, President Tinubu’s actions and those of his associates contradict his public commitment to democratic principles and electoral fairness.
He urged the president to follow the example of former President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that his administration did not deregister opposition political parties despite intense political competition.

Atiku also referenced former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying he demonstrated respect for democratic values by placing national peace above personal political ambition.
The former vice president maintained that any government confident in its popularity and performance should welcome open political competition rather than suppress opposition voices.
He also appealed to members of the judiciary to remain impartial and resist political pressure, stressing that the courts must protect their credibility and uphold justice.
Atiku warned that judges who allow themselves to be influenced by political interests risk damaging public confidence in the judicial system and weakening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
