Australia Government to Partner Nigeria on Climate Resistant Agriculture

- Marc Innes-Brown, the First Assistant Secretary of the Middle East and African Division in the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has pledged to collaborate with Nigeria in promoting climate-resistant agriculture and addressing climate change mitigation.

Eko Hot Blog gathered that Innes-Brown who led the Australian delegation during the fourth Nigeria-Australia consultations ‘Senior Officials Talks’ in Abuja, highlighted Nigeria’s strategic importance internationally and at the continental level as the basis for this partnership.

Emphasizing capacity building in tackling climate resistance in agriculture and responding to the impact of climate change, Innes-Brown underscored the shared similarities in geography and regional leadership roles between Nigeria and Australia.
He expressed confidence that the collaboration would foster stronger ties between the two nations.
Earlier in the talks, Janet Olisa, the director in charge of regions at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, affirmed the intention to leverage previous engagement between the countries to enhance future cooperation.
“Nigeria and Australia have commenced high-level bilateral consultations aimed at strengthening economic ties and exploring new areas of cooperation, particularly in trade, mining, agriculture, and food security.
“Trade is crucial in the economy, which is what makes and breaks a country; with a robust economy, a country will leverage other aspects of life where the business community flourishes.

“We can also talk about food security; a hungry nation is an insecure nation, and Australia has definitely shown such areas that agriculture has been given a very top priority,” Ms Olisa said.
