- The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) moves the presidential election to January 16, 2027.
- The rescheduling is necessitated by the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026.
- Party primaries for the upcoming general elections are set to commence on April 23, 2026.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a significant revision to the timetable for the 2027 General Elections, effectively shifting the polls forward.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a statement released on Wednesday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission revealed that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, January 16, 2027.

This is a departure from the previously scheduled date of February 20, 2027. Similarly, the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections have been moved from March to Saturday, February 6, 2027.
The commission explained that this realignment was mandatory following major legislative changes in Nigeria’s secondary laws.
The recently enacted Electoral Act 2026, which repealed the Electoral Act 2022, introduced new statutory timelines for pre-election activities and electoral processes.
INEC noted that it had to adjust its schedule to ensure full compliance with the updated legal framework.
This shift marks one of the earliest starts to a general election cycle in Nigeria’s recent democratic history, placing additional pressure on political parties to begin their internal preparations much sooner than anticipated.
According to the newly released schedule, the journey to the 2027 polls will officially kick off with party primaries, including the resolution of any arising disputes, between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
The commission also set the dates for the commencement of public campaigns: August 19, 2026, for federal elections and September 9, 2026, for state-level contests.
INEC emphasized that all campaigns must strictly conclude 24 hours before the designated election days, warning that it would maintain zero tolerance for violations of the campaign window as stipulated in the new Act.

Beyond the general elections, the commission also announced adjustments to off-cycle polls.
The Osun State Governorship Election, which was originally slated for August 8, 2026, has been moved by one week to Saturday, August 15, 2026.
While some preparatory activities for the Ekiti and Osun elections have already taken place, INEC assured stakeholders that all remaining processes would be synchronized with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The commission maintains that these changes are designed to strengthen the credibility and inclusive nature of the Nigerian electoral process.
The sudden shift in dates has sent ripples through the political landscape, as the window for strategic planning has effectively narrowed for both incumbent and opposition figures.
INEC has published the full revised timetable on its official website and called for the cooperation of all stakeholders, including security agencies and civil society organizations.
The commission reiterated that the successful conduct of the elections is a collective responsibility, urging political parties to adhere strictly to the new timelines to avoid disqualification or legal complications arising from the new statutory requirements.
