Edo Police Arrest Six Suspected Kidnappers, Recover Cash, Weapons

- Security operatives nab suspects and recover arms, ammunition, and over N1.3 million in cash.

The Edo State Police Command announced on Tuesday that it had arrested six suspected kidnappers and recovered cash believed to be proceeds from their criminal activities.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, stated that arms and ammunition were also seized from the suspects within the last 48 hours. He noted that the arrests took place in various locations across Edo North, a region that has witnessed a surge in violent kidnappings and killings in recent weeks.

According to the statement, operatives of the Agbede Police Division, in collaboration with vigilante personnel, arrested three suspects—Jamilu Idris (20), Usman Shuaibu (24), and Yahuza Usman (20)—on March 16, 2024, at about 4:30 a.m. during a stop-and-search operation at Aviele along Abumere by the power line. A search of the suspects led to the recovery of one English-made Beretta pistol, a dagger, and an Infinix phone. Preliminary investigations revealed that they were part of a syndicate responsible for kidnapping, armed robbery, and motorcycle theft in the area.
Later on March 16, 2025, at about 10:10 p.m., operatives of the Auchi Division, working alongside local vigilantes, intercepted two young men during a routine stop-and-search operation at the UBA junction in Auchi. Upon sighting the police, the suspects attempted to flee, prompting a chase that led to the arrest of one Adamu Usman of Hausa Quarters, while his accomplice managed to escape.
A search of the suspect yielded N1,345,100, believed to be proceeds from kidnapping, along with five micro SIM cards, a machete, a dagger, two phones, and a pack of cigarettes.

Further investigation led to the arrest of two additional suspects, Iliyasu Abubakar (19) and Safiyanu Mohammed (20). One of the recovered SIM cards was traced to Ajibola Sunday, a victim who was kidnapped along with his mother-in-law on March 11, 2025. He later identified the suspects as part of the gang that abducted them and extorted N10 million from their family for their release.
The Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring that perpetrators of crime are brought to justice.
