The Enugu State Government has confirmed the arrest of a woman, Mrs Ogechi John, over the alleged death of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the arrest was disclosed in a statement shared on the WhatsApp media platform of Governor Peter Mbah on Monday.

According to the statement, the suspect, said to be from Oderiko in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force following the child’s death at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene, located in Enugu East Local Government Area.
Residents in the area reportedly alleged that the deceased child had previously been subjected to repeated maltreatment before the tragic incident, which was said to have occurred on Sunday afternoon.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, stated that the government would ensure the suspect faces justice.

She stressed that the administration of Governor Peter Mbah maintains zero tolerance for child abuse and violence against minors.
According to the commissioner, authorities moved swiftly after receiving reports of the incident to ensure the immediate arrest of the suspect.
Enih further assured residents that the state government would closely monitor the investigation and legal proceedings to guarantee speedy justice.
She condemned the alleged act, insisting that no individual has the right to take another person’s life, especially that of a child.
The government also reiterated its commitment to protecting children across the state, warning that perpetrators of child abuse and violence would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
