The European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has officially debunked media reports alleging that it declined an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the upcoming 2027 General Elections.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a statement issued on Monday by the Press and Information Officer of the EU Delegation, Modestus Chukwulaka, the Union expressed surprise over the “inaccurate press reports” and corrected the narrative regarding its official correspondence with INEC.

Clarifying the timeline, the EU confirmed receiving a formal invitation from INEC on April 17, 2026.
In its response dated July 28, 2026, the Delegation formally accepted the invitation, confirming that it will deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) comprising two to four independent experts. The experts will be formally accredited as observers by INEC to monitor the polls.
The EU emphasized that an Electoral Expert Mission, similar to an Electoral Observation Mission, is tasked with assessing whether an election complies with international, regional, and national democratic standards.
Following the exercise, the EEM will draft a comprehensive final report containing recommendations to strengthen future electoral frameworks.
Directly addressing rumors surrounding its decision, the Delegation stated that claimed justifications, such as security concerns or hostile treatment after its 2023 election report, do not exist in its official communication and represent mere speculation.
The EU explained that it evaluates annual election observation deployments based on partner country invitations, local circumstances, and available global resources.
Furthermore, the EU assured that its decision to field an expert mission will not impact the ongoing implementation of the EU-funded “Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria” project, which continues to provide technical support to Nigeria’s electoral process.
The Delegation urged media outlets to verify statements with its official communication office before publication to avoid spreading misleading information.
