- FG Introduces New 3+2 Degree Structure for Colleges of Education
- Students will spend 3 years obtaining the NCE qualification before proceeding to an additional 2-year degree programme
- All Colleges of Education currently running the 4-year dual mandate degree programme are to stop admitting students
The National Commission for Colleges of Education has announced a major reform in the academic structure of Colleges of Education across the country, introducing a new “3+2” pathway that will allow students to earn both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and a bachelor’s degree within the same system.
Eko Hot Blog reports that under the new arrangement, students will spend 3 years obtaining the NCE qualification before proceeding to an additional 2-year degree programme, replacing the existing 4-year dual mandate degree structure.

The commission disclosed that it had received ministerial directives on the implementation of the Dual Mandate and Continuous Five-Year NCE Degree Programme.
According to the directive issued on May 5, 2026, all Colleges of Education currently running the 4-year dual mandate degree programme are to stop admitting students into that structure and fully commence the new system from the 2026/2027 academic session.

With the new framework, students who complete their NCE programme successfully will be able to continue directly into the degree programme at 300 Level without leaving the college system.
The policy is designed to strengthen the relevance of the NCE as the minimum qualification for teaching while creating a smoother and more coordinated route to obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
Education stakeholders have described the reform as a significant step toward improving teacher education in Nigeria and bridging the gap between Colleges of Education and universities.
Many observers also believe the new structure will boost the competitiveness of graduates from Colleges of Education and place them on a stronger footing alongside university graduates.
