He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote press freedom and ensure accountability in governance.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security,” the governor noted that the occasion provides an opportunity to assess how far society has come and how committed stakeholders remain to the true ideals of a free press.
According to him, the media plays a crucial role in promoting peace, strengthening institutions, and driving sustainable development. Beyond informing the public, the press gives voice to the unheard, holds leaders accountable, and serves as a bridge between the government and the people. He added that in today’s fast-changing information space, the responsibility on journalists has become even more significant.
Sanwo-Olu also pointed out that ongoing reforms across the country make it even more important for journalists to remain professional, objective, and balanced in their reporting. He urged members of the media to critically examine government policies while maintaining fairness and avoiding bias.
The governor reiterated that the Lagos State Government is committed to transparency, openness, and constructive engagement with the media, stressing that an informed society is key to achieving peace, security, and inclusive development. At the same time, he encouraged journalists to carry out their duties without fear or favour.

He acknowledged the growing challenges facing the media, including misinformation, disinformation, economic pressures, and safety concerns for journalists, noting that these issues pose risks to national stability.
To address them, he called for stronger collaboration between government, media professionals, civil society, and other stakeholders to protect the integrity of the information space.
Looking ahead to future elections, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the critical role the media will play in shaping public discourse. He urged all stakeholders to uphold ethical journalism, fairness, and national interest during the electioneering period.
He also stressed the importance of continued investment in media literacy, support for ethical journalism, and creating an environment where the press can operate freely without interference.
The governor assured journalists that the Lagos State Government will remain committed to protecting press freedom, supporting the media, and strengthening democratic accountability.
