The Federal Government has taken a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s aviation sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Airbus, one of the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, the deal marks a significant move in Nigeria’s push to reposition its aviation industry and build a more sustainable aerospace ecosystem.

Keyamo was joined on the trip by a high-level delegation, including senior officials from the Ministry of Aviation, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), reflecting the importance the government places on the partnership.

Under the terms of the agreement, Nigeria and Airbus will work together to drive the growth of the country’s civil aviation sector. This will involve support in developing aviation infrastructure as well as investing in human capital through training and skills development.

Speaking at the signing, Keyamo described the partnership as a strategic breakthrough. He said the collaboration aligns with the Federal Government’s broader vision to accelerate growth across all areas of the aviation sector.

On its part, Airbus highlighted Nigeria’s importance in Africa’s aviation future. The company’s President for Africa and the Middle East, Gabriel Semelas, noted that Nigeria’s large population and expanding economy position it as a key player in the global aerospace market.

He added that the partnership reflects a shared goal of scaling up the country’s aviation ecosystem.

As part of the agreement, Airbus will provide technical support in areas such as market intelligence, pilot and crew training, aircraft maintenance, and advisory services on Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations. The partnership will also explore Nigeria’s potential role in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production.

The collaboration is also expected to focus on training the next generation of aviation professionals in Nigeria, helping to prepare the country for future industry demands.

Industry projections further highlight the scale of opportunity. Airbus forecasts that Africa will need about 1,490 new passenger and cargo aircraft by 2044. In addition, the continent is expected to require over 20,000 pilots, 20,000 maintenance engineers, and 21,000 cabin crew members to meet growing air travel demand.

For Nigeria, the MoU is seen as more than just a partnership, it is a strategic move aimed at positioning the country as a leading aviation hub in Africa, while unlocking opportunities for job creation, economic growth, and technological advancement.
