  • Eyewitnesses described the driver as a young man driving recklessly before fleeing the scene.
  • Authorities are on a manhunt for the suspect, as efforts to trace the accident-damaged vehicle have so far been unsuccessful.

A senior officer of the Ogun State Police Command has revealed that the driver responsible for the hit-and-run accident that killed Professor Oladipupo Ademuyiwa, a biochemistry professor at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), is suspected to be an internet fraudster, commonly referred to as a “Yahoo boy.”

EKO HOT BLOG reports that on Tuesday, the officer, who was not authorized to speak to the media, disclosed that efforts to track down the suspect had so far been unsuccessful. The incident occurred on Sunday along the Kemta-Somorin axis of Ajebo Road, Ogun State.

According to reports, Ademuyiwa was struck by the reckless driver, who immediately fled the scene. Upon receiving the alert from a passerby, the police arrived at the location but found no trace of the suspect. The officer noted that law enforcement agencies in the area had been put on high alert to identify any accident-damaged vehicle matching the eyewitness description.

“There was a CCTV camera in a nearby building, but the owner claimed it was not operational at the time of the incident. We have also contacted the Adigbe Police Division and local mechanic workshops to report any suspicious vehicle, but no leads have emerged yet,” the officer stated.

He assured that the police were actively investigating the case and committed to bringing the suspect to justice.

Meanwhile, FUNAAB expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Professor Ademuyiwa in a statement shared on its Instagram page on Monday. The institution extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones, describing his death as a great loss to the university community.

In response to the incident, the Chairman of the Ajebo Road Housing Estate Community Development Association (CDA), Ayo Ajasa, called for urgent government intervention to install speed breakers and enforce stricter traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.

He criticized the state government for neglecting their repeated requests, stating that another accident had occurred within 24 hours of the professor’s death.

However, the Ogun State government distanced itself from any blame, asserting that the professor’s death resulted from reckless driving, not government negligence. In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the government described attempts to hold it responsible as unfair and misleading.

Efforts to obtain a comment from the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, were unsuccessful as she had yet to respond to inquiries as of the time of filing this report.
