Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has signed a bill into law that creates 13 new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), a move he described as a “historic moment” in the state’s democratic evolution.
According to Eko Hot Blog, the bill, unanimously passed by the Gombe State House of Assembly, brings the number of grassroots administrative units in the state to 24, complementing the existing 11 local government areas.

At the signing ceremony on Monday, Governor Yahaya stated, “Constitutionally, Gombe State has only 11 local government areas, the second lowest in the country, even though our landmass surpasses 15 other states.”
He argued that this structural imbalance has deprived citizens of access to government services and exacerbated insecurity through the proliferation of ungoverned spaces. The new LCDAs, he said, represent a decisive corrective measure.
The new LCDAs include Akko North, Balanga South, Billiri West, Dukku North, and Yamaltu East, among others. The governor has directed both the new and existing councils to prioritize four critical sectors: security, basic education, primary healthcare, and agriculture.

To ensure a smooth transition, Governor Yahaya announced the constitution of a high-powered Transition Technical Committee, chaired by the Deputy Governor, and pledged to sign an Executive Order to give the committee legal backing.
He stressed that the long-term benefits of the new councils far outweigh the expenses, drawing an analogy to the creation of Gombe State itself in 1996.
