How my Father Died 20 Seconds After Prayers – Senator Zwingina’s Son
Political figures, family members, and friends gathered on Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Garki, Abuja, to honor the late Senator Jonathan Zwingina, who passed away on October 3, shortly after celebrating his 70th birthday.
The commendation service provided an opportunity for dignitaries and loved ones to reflect on the life of the former Senate Majority Leader, sharing heartfelt memories and accolades that underscored Zwingina’s significant influence in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
In an emotional tribute, Zwingina’s eldest son, Kabrh, recounted his father’s final moments, offering a touching testament to the peace surrounding his passing.
“I want to share a testimony about his last moments,” Kabrh said. “I called Reverend Tom, and we met at the hospital. We sensed that something was amiss, so Reverend Tom led us in prayers of salvation and forgiveness. Barely 20 seconds later, my dad passed.”

Former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, praised Zwingina as a visionary and a man of integrity. “This is a very shocking departure,” Gana remarked, reflecting on Zwingina’s recent birthday celebration.
“I spoke on that day, not knowing it would be the last time we would celebrate with him. Senator Zwingina lived a life of tremendous impact and integrity. He was always ahead of his peers with his visionary thinking and leadership.”
Gana further emphasized Zwingina’s instrumental role in Nigeria’s political development, particularly during the formative years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“He was very close to me when we worked to restore democracy. He was a leader in both thought and action,” he added, highlighting Zwingina’s dedication to excellence.
Former Senate President Ken Nnamani also paid tribute, commending Zwingina’s intellectual prowess and remarkable memory, which earned him the nickname “encyclopedia” during his tenure in the Senate. “He was like the Ronaldo or Messi of Constitutional Amendments debates,” Nnamani quipped, reflecting on Zwingina’s unmatched recall and debate skills. “His passing is a significant loss to Adamawa State and the entire country.”
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, delivered a deeply personal tribute, recounting their decades-long friendship. “We met during our university days, and our bond has only grown stronger since,” he shared. “Zwingina was a towering figure in Adamawa State politics. His wisdom and capacity will remain a lasting legacy for future generations.”
Former Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang also reflected on their 40-year relationship, dating back to when Zwingina served as the Director-General of Mass Mobilization for Self-Reliance, Social Justice, and Economic Recovery under Jang’s leadership as the Military Governor of Gongola State. “He was a hardworking and intelligent man who made an indelible mark,” Jang stated.

Honourable James Barka; former Minister Frank Nweke Jnr; Senator Binta Garba; and Mr. Kayode Komolafe, representing the MKO Abiola Hope ’93 Campaign.
Also present were Senator Tunde Ogbeha, former Deputy Governor of Gombe State Tha’anda Rubainu; former Edo State Governor, Senator Oserheimen Osunbor; ex-Minister of Information Labaran Maku; Senator Ugochukwu Uba; Senator Patrick Ndubueze; and former Minister Senator Udo Udoma.
The outpouring of tributes highlighted the deep respect and admiration Senator Jonathan Zwingina commanded throughout his life, not only as a political figure but as a principled individual whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
