The situation created anxiety among members of the community, leading to speculation and heightened suspicion.
A representative of the local government explained that the authorities received reports regarding new arrivals in the area and immediately moved to engage the situation in order to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
He noted that during festive seasons, particularly Eid periods, it is common for visitors, traders, and pastoral groups to move across different communities for legitimate economic and social activities.
However, the large number of arrivals this year reportedly caused concern among residents, who alerted relevant authorities for clarification.
Security operatives and local officials were subsequently deployed to the area to verify identities and ensure that no threat existed to public safety.
The intervention, however, led to panic among some of the visitors, who reportedly fled upon seeing security presence, an action that further escalated suspicions among residents.
In the process, some of the individuals were apprehended by community members who believed they were dealing with suspected criminal elements.
The incident created confusion in the area before security agencies stepped in to restore calm and begin proper profiling.
Authorities have since clarified that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the identities and intentions of those involved, while urging residents to avoid conclusions that could lead to misinformation or unnecessary tension.
The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government was also said to have directed security agencies to intensify surveillance across all communities within the axis to ensure continued peace and safety.
Residents have been advised to remain calm, report suspicious movements through appropriate channels, and allow security agencies to carry out their duties professionally.
Community leaders have equally appealed for restraint, emphasizing the importance of unity, peaceful coexistence, and trust in lawful security processes.
