Iran has carried out the execution of a man convicted of involvement in armed attacks during nationwide anti-government protests that reached their peak in January, according to the country’s judiciary.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the judiciary’s Mizan Online outlet said Abbas Akbari was executed on Monday morning after being found guilty of leading armed activities during unrest in Isfahan Province.

Authorities said Akbari was accused of firing at security personnel during street clashes and participating in what they described as violent “riots” in the city of Nain. He was also accused of attacking government buildings, security facilities, and health centres.
According to the report, he was arrested and later convicted on charges including “moharebeh,” an Iranian legal term interpreted as “waging war against God,” along with offences linked to attempts to disrupt public order and national security.
The judiciary said his death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court after appeal before it was carried out.

The execution comes amid a broader wave of capital punishment cases in Iran, which has reportedly increased hangings in security-related prosecutions following heightened tensions with Israel and the United States.
On Sunday, Iranian authorities also executed a separate individual accused of espionage, marking what observers described as the first such case tied to recent conflict-related accusations.
Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, say Iran remains one of the world’s leading countries in carrying out executions, second only to China.
