In a landmark decision, the Kano State Government has dropped all criminal charges against the #EndBadGovernance protesters, delivering a major victory for justice and civil rights in Nigeria.

The decision follows a series of arrests during nationwide demonstrations that took place between August 1 and August 10, 2024, when Nigerians took to the streets to protest against poor governance, corruption, and human rights violations.
The charges against the protesters included serious accusations such as conspiracy to commit treason, unlawful assembly, and public disturbance.
Citizens’ Gavel, a Nigerian advocacy group, played a pivotal role in securing the withdrawal of the charges. On November 5, 2024, the organization submitted a petition urging the Attorney General to dismiss the cases under Section 211(1)(c) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.
Citizens’ Gavel, alongside its legal partners, also filed Fundamental Human Rights Enforcement Applications in court to challenge the arrests and uphold the rights of those involved.
Rachael Adio, Communications Associate at Citizens’ Gavel, hailed the withdrawal of charges as a monumental step for civil liberties.
She described the ruling as a reaffirmation of Nigerians’ constitutional rights to peacefully protest without fear of state retaliation.
“This victory is not just for the protesters but for all Nigerians who believe in the fundamental rights to express dissent and demand accountability from their leaders,” Adio said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The organization also commended the Attorney General of Kano State for respecting the rule of law and ensuring that justice was served.
“We remain committed to advocating for justice and protecting civil liberties across Nigeria,” the statement continued. “This decision reinforces our belief that a Nigeria where citizens can freely protest without fear is achievable.”
With the charges now dropped, the #EndBadGovernance protesters have been cleared of all accusations, signaling a victory not only for them but for the broader fight for human rights and democracy in Nigeria.
