The announcement followed a formal presentation where the governor received special honors, including an award from the Kano State Pilot Association, in recognition of his sustained efforts toward supporting state-sponsored pilots in completing their professional qualifications.
According to a press statement released on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the proposed Kano Airline is designed as a strategic investment to harness human capital in the aviation sector.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the state government is fully committed to mobilizing all necessary resources, infrastructure, and administrative backing required to bring the commercial airline from concept to operational reality within the stipulated time frame.
The governor praised the dedication and academic achievements of young aviators from Kano State who underwent rigorous professional pilot training in Jordan through a specialized scholarship scheme originally initiated by a previous state administration.
He assured the aviators that his administration would remain steadfast in building sustainable platforms through which their skills can be directly absorbed into Nigeria’s growing commercial aviation market.
Earlier in the council proceedings, the Chairman of the Kano State Pilot Association, Captain Naziru Ibrahim, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Yusuf for stepping in to assist pilots in overcoming licensing hurdles.
Captain Ibrahim noted that the state government’s financial and logistical intervention was instrumental in enabling several association members to revalidate their flying licenses.
Ibrahim further appealed to the state executive council for continued backing to help remaining members secure their final commercial pilot certifications, which are required to command domestic and international flights.
He emphasized that establishing a state-owned carrier would permanently resolve employment bottlenecks for northern aviators and set a groundbreaking precedent for sub-national aviation initiatives across Nigeria.
By moving to establish its own commercial airline, Kano State joins a select group of Nigerian sub-national entities taking direct equity and operational roles in commercial aviation, aiming to bolster local revenue generation, expand trade routes, and position Kano as a prominent aviation hub in West Africa.
