The Lagos State House of Assembly has raised concerns over the increasing number of abandoned road projects across the state and has urged the government to take immediate action to ease the suffering of residents affected by these delays.

Ekohotblog reports that during a plenary session, lawmakers summoned the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure along with contractors to present a detailed report on the status of these roads. They also directed the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to create a clear plan for completing the projects while ensuring adequate security measures for residents.

Speaker Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensure that work resumes on the abandoned Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road in Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA. She further instructed all lawmakers to compile lists of abandoned roads in their constituencies for submission to the ministry for immediate intervention.

The resolution followed a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised by Hon. Aro Moshood, who described the deplorable condition of roads in Ikorodu as a major problem.

“This road has been abandoned since 2017. Instead of bringing relief to the people, it has become a source of distress, increasing insecurity and economic hardship,” Hon. Moshood said.

He highlighted the rise in crime, including kidnappings, accidents, and sexual assaults, due to the road’s poor state.

Supporting the motion, Hon. Abiodun Ogunleye stressed the economic benefits of completing the road, while Hon. Lukmon Sa’ad Olumoh criticized the delay despite previous budget allocations.

“It is unacceptable that a road project has been abandoned for over seven years. We must invite the contractors to explain if the approved funds were actually released,” Hon. Olumoh stated.

Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon, called for immediate action and demanded accountability from the Commissioner and contractors.

“This issue of abandoned roads must not be ignored. Those responsible must provide answers,” he insisted.

Additionally, Hon. Tobun Abiodun suggested a new law to ensure project continuity across different administrations, preventing future cases of abandonment.

Echoing the concerns, Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, pointed out that the issue is not limited to Ikorodu but affects several parts of Lagos.

“This is a state-wide problem. The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure must give a full explanation,” he added.
