EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, is the first to resign just as President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that all cabinet members vying for elective offices tender their resignation on or before May 16, 2022.
The development was made known on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja.
Buhari, while issuing the directive today during the Federal Executive Council meeting, singled out Nwajiuba who had resigned since April 28 for commendation, saying: “I expect other members of this council seeking to be President to resign with immediate effect.”
According to reports, the minister intends to focus on the upcoming party primaries.
Nwajiuba obtained his nomination form last week and he is expected to battle for the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential ticket with the likes of Bola Tinubu, Yemi Osinbajo, and others.
The tenure of the Minister has been fraught with incessant industrial actions by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The most recent industrial action kicked off since February 14 and subsequent rollovers at the expiration of the initial warning action.
ASUU has been demanding that the federal government upholds its 2009 agreement signed with the union. The agreement requires that the government commit ₦200 billion annually for five years to the revitalisation of the sector. To meet this segment of the ASUU demand, the federal government must cough out ₦1 trillion.
