The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Russia, with a focus on expanding cooperation in trade, education, and investment.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Doris Uzoka Anite, made this known while receiving the Trade Commissioner of the Russian Federation, Maxim Petrov, and his delegation in Abuja.

The visit was aimed at deepening technical partnerships and exploring new areas of collaboration between both countries.
Speaking during the meeting, the minister highlighted Nigeria’s readiness to support initiatives that promote stronger cooperation, especially efforts that deliver development outcomes at the grassroots level.
She noted that while both countries have made progress in their relationship, there is still significant room to expand collaboration into more impactful sectors, particularly in education and human capital development.

“We are here to listen to your plans and ideas, and we remain fully committed to supporting initiatives that will strengthen our partnership,” she said.
Also speaking, a representative of the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Deborah Odoh, described Nigeria’s relationship with Russia as steady and productive, expressing optimism about future cooperation.
In his remarks, Petrov commended Nigeria’s leadership and reiterated Russia’s willingness to deepen engagement across multiple sectors.
He also highlighted a new education initiative that offers fully funded scholarships to Nigerian students in Russia, covering tuition and accommodation, while beneficiaries are expected to handle travel and basic expenses.
According to him, about 200 Nigerian students are currently benefiting from the programme, with plans to expand it to cover more sectors, including industry, healthcare, and hospitality.
Petrov stressed that Russia’s approach is based on mutual respect and shared goals, noting that the country is focused on aligning its support with Nigeria’s development priorities.
The meeting reinforced both countries’ commitment to building stronger partnerships that can drive economic growth and sustainable development.
