The Nigerian Army has reinforced its tradition of honouring past heroes as the Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke led a delegation on a courtesy and solidarity visit to Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Wesley Tafida, a revered World War II veteran and father of retired Major General HT Wesley.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the visit was intended to recognise Tafida’s historic contribution to Nigeria’s security during World War II between 1944 and 1945, when he served as a courier responsible for transporting arms and ammunition in defence of the country’s territorial integrity.

Now 106 years old, the veteran warmly welcomed the officers and expressed appreciation for their service, assuring them that dedication to national duty never goes unrewarded. He also praised the Brigade Commander for his commitment to maintaining peace and security in Taraba State.

RSM Tafida recalled his years of service in the Nigerian Army, revealing that he was discharged from the 93 Mechanised Infantry Battalion at Ojo Cantonment after serving for seven years as a Regimental Sergeant Major.
Speaking during the visit, the Commander of 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, commended the veteran’s sacrifices, describing them as a foundation upon which today’s military professionalism is built. He reaffirmed the Army’s resolve to honour its veterans while sustaining operational excellence and security across Taraba State.

Brigadier General Uwa also assured that the military remains focused and undeterred by evolving security challenges, stressing that ongoing efforts will ultimately defeat insecurity in the region. He reiterated this commitment as the delegation departed Tafida’s residence in Jalingo.
In a related development, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, has applauded Brigadier General Uwa for his leadership and consistent efforts in restoring peace and stability across the state. He noted that the commander’s proactive approach has renewed public confidence in security agencies.

During a courtesy visit to the Brigade headquarters, Pheelangwa praised the discipline, professionalism, and dedication of officers and soldiers of 6 Brigade, describing their conduct as reflective of the finest traditions of the Nigerian Army.
He encouraged the formation to sustain its operational momentum and strengthen civil-military cooperation, which he said has played a key role in reducing insecurity and unrest in Taraba and surrounding areas.

In response, Brigadier General Uwa expressed gratitude for the visit and reaffirmed the loyalty of officers and men of 6 Brigade to constituted authority, pledging continued discipline and professionalism in the discharge of their constitutional duties.
