The joint communiqué, signed by the NUT Oyo State Chapter Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, emphasized that the lack of progress in rescue efforts has forced the union’s hand.
The union noted that the prolonged captivity of their members and students has created an atmosphere of intense fear and anxiety within academic environments.
This prevailing insecurity has significantly heightened tension across local communities and left parents terrified of sending their children back to classrooms. By shutting down academic activities, the NUT aims to force both state and federal authorities to prioritize and accelerate counter-kidnapping strategies in the region.
Educators have been instructed to comply fully with the stay-at-home directive, prioritize their personal safety, and remain law-abiding as they await further updates from the union.

The sweeping shutdown coincides with a new directive from the presidency.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate deployment of a specialized crack team to Oyo State to take over tracking and rescue operations.
Despite this federal intervention, the NUT maintains that the strike will continue until all victims are successfully accounted for and released from captivity.
Reaffirming total solidarity with the traumatized families, the union leadership assured members that it will remain actively engaged with government security agencies until normal safety conditions can be guaranteed for both learners and teachers across the country.
