The Pope, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, has struggled with respiratory issues for over a week. This is not the first time he has been hospitalised for bronchitis, he previously spent three nights at Gemelli hospital in March 2023 for the same condition, which was treated successfully with antibiotics.
In December 2023, another bout of bronchitis forced him to cancel a planned trip to Dubai for the United Nations COP28 climate change conference.
Beyond his respiratory issues, Pope Francis has faced several health challenges in recent years. These include knee and hip pain, an inflamed colon, and surgery for a hernia.
