The 88-year-old pontiff has been experiencing breathing difficulties in recent days and has had aides read his speeches aloud on multiple occasions.

The Vatican stated that Francis was admitted following his morning audiences for “some necessary diagnostic tests and to continue treatment for ongoing bronchitis in a hospital setting.”

The Pope, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, has struggled with respiratory issues for over a week. This is not the first time he has been hospitalised for bronchitis, he previously spent three nights at Gemelli hospital in March 2023 for the same condition, which was treated successfully with antibiotics.

In December 2023, another bout of bronchitis forced him to cancel a planned trip to Dubai for the United Nations COP28 climate change conference.

Beyond his respiratory issues, Pope Francis has faced several health challenges in recent years. These include knee and hip pain, an inflamed colon, and surgery for a hernia.

Despite these setbacks, he has continued to fulfil many of his papal duties, though he has increasingly relied on delegation for physically demanding tasks.

The Vatican has not provided a timeline for his discharge, but officials remain optimistic about his recovery. As the leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis’ health is closely monitored, and his hospitalisation has drawn global attention.
