EKO HOT BLOG reports that the announcement came during a press briefing aboard the papal plane as he returned from his first six-day international tour, which covered Turkey and Lebanon between November 27 and December 2, 2025.
Speaking to journalists, the leader of the global Catholic community expressed a strong interest in tracing the footsteps of Saint Augustine. “I hope to make a trip to Africa which could be my next trip. Personally, I hope to go to Algeria to visit the places from the life of Saint Augustine,” he said.
The 70 year old pontiff, who was elected in May 2025 and is a member of the Augustinian Order, noted the spiritual and political relevance of visiting Algeria. He explained that Saint Augustine remains a unifying symbol in the country and plays a role in promoting harmony between religious communities.
Vatican officials believe a visit to Algeria would help strengthen ongoing dialogue between Christians and Muslims. They also revealed that a broader Africa tour could include stops in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

The Pope added that he remains eager to visit Latin America, especially Argentina, Uruguay, and Peru, where he previously served as a missionary for over two decades.
