Rainstorm Destroys Over 100 Homes in Edo, Residents Left Stranded

A devastating rainstorm has blown off the roofs of hundreds of houses and caused the collapse of several buildings across multiple communities in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Edo State.

Prince Yekini Idaiye, the lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo 1 at the Edo State House of Assembly, raised the issue on Monday through a motion under matters of urgent public importance. He revealed that the rainstorm, which struck on March 3, 2025, left widespread destruction in its wake.
Idaiye urged his colleagues to support calls for immediate relief from relevant agencies and well-meaning individuals to assist affected residents.
Adding to the discussion, the Majority Leader and representative of Ovia North East 1, Mr. Charity Aiguobarueghian, along with the Minority Leader and Owan East representative, Mr. Eric Okaka, confirmed that the storm also wreaked havoc in their respective constituencies.
Hon. Kingsley Ugabi of Etsako East sympathized with the victims and emphasized the need for local governments to encourage tree planting as a preventive measure against rainstorm damage.

Speaker Blessing Agbebaku echoed the call for residents to plant trees in their communities to mitigate future disasters.
Following deliberations, the Assembly passed a resolution urging the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and other relevant authorities to provide urgent relief for those affected.
