Residents of Ilu-Abo and neighbouring communities in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday blocked the Akure–Owo Expressway while protesting rising cases of kidnapping in the area.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the protesters reportedly used the remains of a kidnapping victim to barricade the road, disrupting traffic and causing a major gridlock along the expressway, which links southern parts of the country to the North.

The residents, including youths, insisted they would not reopen the road until the government takes decisive action to address the growing insecurity in the local government area.
Carrying placards with various inscriptions, the protesters lamented that constant kidnapping attacks had made farming and daily activities almost impossible in their communities.
Some of the placards read, “We Are Dying, Save Our Soul,” “Mr Governor, Please Assist Us,” and “Our Children Are in Danger.”
The residents demanded that the governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, personally address them and outline measures to tackle the security challenges affecting the communities.

Despite efforts by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, to persuade the protesters to allow the free flow of traffic, the residents refused to vacate the road, insisting their lives remained at risk.
Lawal assured the protesters that security agencies, including the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps, and the Nigeria Police Force, would intensify efforts to protect lives and property in the affected communities.
The police commissioner also visited the monarch of Ilu-Abo, Olu Falae, to brief him on steps being taken by security agencies to address the situation.
According to Lawal, additional police personnel and tactical units would be deployed to the area to help curb the wave of insecurity.
