Sheikh bin Humaid is one of the nine Imams at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, and has held several scholarly and leadership roles. His education includes a Ph.D. in Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh from Umm Al-Qura University in Mecca.
He was born in 1950 in Buraidah, Qassim. He has also served in roles such as President of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy and Vice President of the oversight for the Two Holy Mosques.
Among his duties as Grand Mufti will be issuing fatwas, guiding religious discourse, and presiding over the Council of Senior Scholars a body that influences religious policy, interpretation of Islamic law, and legal-religious education in the Kingdom.
The passing of Sheikh Abdulaziz was widely mourned. He had served as Grand Mufti since 1999, leading the country’s highest religious authority and contributing to decades of jurisprudence, religious education, and civic religious guidance.

Dr. bin Humaid’s appointment comes at a time when Saudi Arabia continues to balance tradition with reform, especially in religious affairs. Observers expect his leadership to maintain continuity while also playing a key role in evolving religious scholarship in the region.
