Senate To Screen Acting CJN Kekere-Ekun For Confirmation Today

The Senate is set to screen Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, today (Wednesday), for her potential confirmation as the substantive CJN.

On Tuesday, the Senate received a formal request from President Bola Tinubu for Kekere-Ekun’s confirmation, which was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the plenary session.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Kekere-Ekun has been serving as the acting CJN since August, following the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. She was sworn in on an interim basis by President Tinubu.

In his letter, President Tinubu invoked Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which grants him the power to appoint a CJN upon the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and subject to Senate confirmation.

He expressed confidence in the Senate’s prompt action, stating, “I hereby forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, CON, for confirmation as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

I trust that this request will receive the Senate’s prompt consideration and approval.”

The nomination has been referred to the Committee of the Whole for deliberation today. If confirmed, Justice Kekere-Ekun will become the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria and the second woman to hold the position in the nation’s history.
