- Algeria fail to register a single shot on target
President Bola Tinubu has praised the Super Eagles following their convincing 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarter finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.
Nigeria sealed a place in the semi finals with a dominant second half display at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, ending Algeria’s impressive defensive record in the tournament. Before the encounter, the Desert Foxes had conceded just one goal, but they were overwhelmed by Nigeria’s intensity, organisation and sharp finishing after the break.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that reacting shortly after the final whistle, President Tinubu took to his verified 𝕏 handle to commend the team’s performance and fighting spirit.
“Brilliant performance… inspiring. Go, Super Eagles! You have the support of all Nigerians,” the President wrote, using the hashtags #Naija4TheWin and #AFCON2025.
After a goalless first half, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 47th minute when Victor Osimhen powered home a header from a well delivered cross by Bruno Onyemaechi. The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Nigeria’s favour, as the Super Eagles pressed higher and dictated the tempo of the game.
Nigeria doubled their advantage ten minutes later through Akor Adams, who finished calmly after a fine assist from Osimhen. The move was neatly constructed, with Alex Iwobi playing a key role in the build up.
Throughout the contest, Nigeria dominated possession and created the clearer chances, pinning Algeria deep in their half for long spells. The North Africans struggled to cope with the sustained pressure and failed to register a single shot on target during the match.
Late substitutions, including the introduction of Moses Simon, helped Nigeria manage the closing stages comfortably as they saw out the game with maturity and discipline.
Speaking after the match, Osimhen expressed appreciation to Nigerian supporters at home and abroad.

“Hello to the Super Eagles fans. Thank you so much for your support worldwide,” he said. “This victory was not easy, and I’m happy that the team got the win against Algeria. Thank you for your support. We will continue to build on this momentum and hopefully get to the final and win it.”
