President Bola Tinubu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have agreed to deepen diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Germany, with a focus on security, electricity, and rail transport.
According to a statement from the Presidency, Eko Hot Blog gathered that the two leaders reached the understanding during a phone conversation on Wednesday afternoon.

They discussed ways to expand cooperation in key sectors, including power infrastructure, railway development, creative industries, and skills training.

A major part of their discussion centred on Nigeria’s Presidential Power Initiative. President Tinubu noted that the country requires support to strengthen its power transmission network.
In response, Chancellor Merz reportedly assured him that Siemens is prepared to provide technical assistance, while Deutsche Bank could help finance the project.
The leaders also raised concerns about the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel region.
Tinubu emphasised the need for enhanced intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities, including access to used helicopters to improve surveillance efforts across the corridor.

Merz, for his part, expressed anticipation over the arrival of Nigeria’s new ambassador to Germany, signalling Berlin’s interest in maintaining strong diplomatic engagement.
In addition, the German Chancellor highlighted the importance of cultural collaboration and proposed the creation of a Great Museum of African Arts as part of broader cultural cooperation between both nations.
The call, which lasted roughly nine minutes, concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to closer partnership in areas of mutual interest.
