EKO HOT BLOG reports that Onanuga disclosed the visit in a post on his 𝕏 account, where he shared a video showing President Wadagni’s arrival and reception by President Tinubu.
Although details of their discussions were not made public, the visit comes amid the longstanding diplomatic and economic relationship between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
The two neighbouring countries have maintained close ties over the years, strengthened by shared cultural heritage, historical connections, and economic cooperation. Nigeria and Benin also continue to collaborate on issues relating to border security, trade facilitation, and energy development.
The visit follows a series of recent engagements between both leaders and their governments.
In May 2026, Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Tinubu at the inauguration of Wadagni as President of the Republic of Benin in Cotonou.
The trip was confirmed in a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President.
Prior to his inauguration, Wadagni secured victory in Benin’s presidential election held on April 12, 2026. The former Finance Minister emerged president-elect after winning the poll by a significant margin.
Following the election, President Tinubu congratulated Wadagni on his victory, describing the outcome as a reflection of the confidence the people of Benin have in his leadership and public service record.
In his congratulatory message issued in April, Tinubu also commended the peaceful and orderly conduct of the election and praised the people and government of Benin for their commitment to democratic values throughout the electoral process.

Monday’s meeting further highlights the growing cooperation and diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin as both countries continue to strengthen bilateral relations.
