The security personnel were reportedly ambushed in the Shanga Local Government Area while responding to a distress call.
Governor Nasir Idris, while receiving the Vice President, noted that the ambush underscores the grave risks faced by frontline operatives. He thanked the Federal Government for its solidarity, stating that the visit served as a necessary balm for a state in mourning.
The visit also served as an official condolence for the death of the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman-Zuru.
Governor Idris revealed that despite every effort to save the Speaker’s life, including flying him abroad for specialized medical treatment, he eventually passed away.
Vice President Shettima described the simultaneous tragedies of the security breach and the Speaker’s demise as “profound and painful,” reiterating that the Federal Government remains a partner to Kebbi State in these trying times.
Speaking during the visit, the Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Sanusi Mika’ilu, praised the state government for its immediate support to the victims’ families and affected communities.
However, the mood in Kebbi remained somber as residents and stakeholders called for a more robust security architecture to prevent similar ambushes in the future.
The Federal Government has promised to bolster its support “in all ramifications” to ensure that the sacrifice of the fallen heroes is not in vain and that peace is restored to the troubled parts of the state.
