Trump’s Controversial Nominees Face Tough Senate Scrutiny, Including GOP Doubts

- Trump’s nominees, including Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., face tough questioning from both Democrats and Republicans.
- Gabbard is pressed on her views regarding Edward Snowden, while Kennedy faces skepticism over vaccine safety.
- Kash Patel finds more support from Republicans, suggesting his confirmation is more secure despite Democratic opposition.
Three of President Donald Trump’s most controversial nominees faced intense questioning during Senate hearings on Thursday, receiving pointed skepticism from both Democrats and several Republican senators, marking the most direct GOP opposition to Trump’s nominees so far.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominated for Health and Human Services secretary, was questioned by GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who expressed concerns over Kennedy’s past statements on vaccine safety.

Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s choice for director of national intelligence, was grilled by several Republicans over her stance on Russian aggression, U.S. government surveillance, and NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
When asked multiple times if Snowden was a “traitor,” Gabbard acknowledged he broke the law but refrained from labelling him as a traitor.
Kash Patel, nominated for FBI director, had heated exchanges with Democrats over his past rhetoric about targeting Trump’s perceived “deep state” adversaries.
However, he received more support from Republicans on the Judiciary Committee, suggesting his confirmation is more secure.
If all Democrats oppose Trump’s nominees, the president can only afford to lose three GOP senators for confirmation.

However, Gabbard’s nomination could be in jeopardy, as just one Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee could block her if all Democrats oppose her.
Trump’s allies have already launched aggressive campaigns to sway undecided Republicans, particularly in support of Defence Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth, and similar efforts are expected for Gabbard and Kennedy.
