U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a resolution to the war in Ukraine. The summit is scheduled for August 15 in Alaska and comes after a ceasefire deadline, previously set by Trump, passed without any new commitments from Russia.
Eko Hot Blog reports that a key aspect of the proposed peace deal is Trump’s controversial suggestion of a “land swap” between Russia and Ukraine.

This idea is expected to face strong opposition, as Ukraine and its European allies have consistently stated they will not agree to any peace deal that involves giving up occupied territories to Russia.
The meeting’s location in Alaska is also strategic, as the U.S. is not a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has an active arrest warrant for Putin. Holding the talks in Alaska allows Putin to attend without the risk of detention.

The prospect of this meeting, particularly without the direct involvement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has raised concerns that Ukraine’s interests could be sidelined.
While Trump has expressed his confidence in brokering a deal, Zelenskyy has insisted that face-to-face talks with Putin are necessary but that European allies must also be part of the peace process.
This upcoming summit marks a significant diplomatic moment, being the first meeting between a sitting U.S. and Russian president since 2021.
The talks aim to find a breakthrough, even though Moscow and Kyiv remain far apart on key conditions for peace, especially concerning territorial demands.
