US Releases John F. Kennedy Assassination Files

- US begins releasing unredacted JFK assassination files following Trump’s executive order.
- Historians skeptical of major revelations as 80,000 pages are expected to be unsealed.
- Many Americans still doubt Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in 1963 Dallas shooting.
The US government has begun releasing a trove of documents related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy — a case that continues to fuel conspiracy theories more than 60 years after his death.
The move follows an executive order issued in January by President Donald Trump, mandating the release of previously redacted files connected to the investigation. Trump has estimated that approximately 80,000 pages of documents will be unsealed.

Historians, however, are not anticipating major revelations. Many have begun combing through the newly released records, which were made public on Tuesday night. While the National Archives has previously released hundreds of thousands of JFK-related documents, some had remained classified due to national security concerns. Many Americans continue to believe that the alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, did not act alone.
Kennedy was fatally shot during a motorcade in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963.
It remains unclear how much of the material released in this latest batch is new. According to experts, many of the documents had already been made public in redacted form. “You’ve got a lot of reading,” Trump told reporters on Monday, ahead of the release. “I don’t believe we’re going to redact anything.”
However, US media outlets reported that some of the hundreds of newly unsealed files still contained redactions. Others were difficult to read due to faded text or poor-quality scans of original documents.
A government commission concluded that Kennedy was killed by Oswald, a former Marine and self-proclaimed Marxist who had previously defected to the Soviet Union before returning to the US. Despite this official finding, public skepticism persists. Polls over the decades have consistently shown that most Americans doubt Oswald acted alone.
The case has long been shrouded in mystery, spawning theories that implicate various groups, including government agencies and organized crime, as well as more fringe actors.
In 1992, Congress passed legislation requiring the release of all investigative documents within 25 years. While both Trump during his first term and President Joe Biden have declassified many JFK files, thousands remained sealed until now.

Trump’s recent executive order also calls for the release of documents related to the assassinations of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., both killed in 1968.
The Republican president pledged to disclose the JFK files during last year’s presidential campaign, a promise made shortly after receiving the endorsement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., JFK’s nephew and son of Robert Kennedy. Kennedy Jr. has since been appointed as Trump’s health secretary.
