Despite the absences, the Uruguayan midfielder produced a remarkable 22-minute burst in the opening half that dismantled the visiting English champions.

Madrid could have increased their advantage after the break, but Vinícius Júnior failed to convert a penalty. Even so, the hosts will travel to Manchester for the return leg next Tuesday holding a commanding lead.
Although Madrid are record 15-time champions of Europe, their inconsistent form this season meant few expected such a convincing display. Meanwhile, City who lifted their only Champions League trophy in 2023, had already defeated Madrid earlier in the competition and arrived in strong form.
However, when the stakes were highest, Madrid produced one of their best performances of the campaign, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side stunned.

Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa had to manage without injured players such as Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo. He handed a starting opportunity to 18-year-old midfielder Thiago Pitarch following several promising performances.
Guardiola, formerly of FC Barcelona, opted for an aggressive lineup aimed at exploiting Madrid’s defensive weaknesses this season.
He played with just two central midfielders and left creative players Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki on the bench, while Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi made their Champions League debuts.
City initially looked comfortable, creating the first real opportunity when Semenyo forced a save from Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. But Madrid struck first against the flow of play.
Courtois launched a long ball forward toward Valverde. Defender Nico O’Reilly misjudged its flight, allowing the midfielder to break through on goal. As goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma rushed out, Valverde calmly rounded him and slotted the ball into the net in the 20th minute.

Just seven minutes later, the Madrid captain doubled the lead. After receiving a pass from Vinícius, Valverde fired a precise shot past Donnarumma to make it 2–0.
Valverde’s resurgence has been notable. Earlier this season he had often been deployed at right-back under Xabi Alonso, but Arbeloa’s arrival in January has allowed him to flourish in midfield. The 27-year-old had already boosted team morale with a late winner against Celta Vigo in La Liga just days earlier.
Before halftime he completed the first hat-trick of his career, and it was his best goal of the night. Latching onto a pass from Brahim Díaz, Valverde cleverly flicked the ball over Guehi before striking a powerful volley into the net, sending the Bernabéu crowd into celebration.
Madrid continued to threaten after the interval. Díaz nearly added a fourth goal, but Donnarumma made a strong save to keep City in the game.

Soon after, Donnarumma brought down Vinícius in the penalty area, giving Madrid a chance to extend their lead further. The Italian goalkeeper, however, redeemed himself by diving low to stop the Brazilian’s penalty.
City’s main attacking threat, Erling Haaland, had a quiet evening thanks to the defensive work of Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen. Guardiola eventually substituted the Norwegian striker despite his team trailing.
The visitors’ best chance to score came late when O’Reilly tested Courtois, but the Belgian goalkeeper reacted quickly, blocking the effort with his leg to preserve a valuable clean sheet for Madrid.
