Venezuela has released six U.S. detainees following high-level talks in Caracas between President Nicolás Maduro and a senior official from the Trump administration.
The announcement was made on social media by former U.S. President Donald Trump and his special envoy, Richard Grenell. Grenell, who shared a photo of the six men aboard his plane, stated that they had personally thanked Trump in a phone call.

Earlier, the White House had demanded Venezuela release what it called “U.S. hostages” and accept the return of Venezuelan criminals deported from the U.S., warning of potential consequences if the demands were not met.
Grenell did not disclose the names of the released detainees, who were seen wearing light blue uniforms associated with the Venezuelan prison system.
“We are wheels up and headed home with these six American citizens,” Grenell posted on X. “They just spoke to @realDonaldTrump and couldn’t stop thanking him.” Trump echoed the sentiment in a separate post, stating that Grenell was bringing “six hostages home from Venezuela.”
The release follows Venezuela’s January announcement that it had captured a group of “mercenaries,” which included U.S. citizens.
Venezuelan state media described the discussions with Trump’s envoy as respectful. Following the meeting, Maduro stated that the talks had “zero agenda” and that he was seeking a “new beginning in bilateral relations” with the U.S.

However, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that Grenell’s visit did not signal U.S. recognition of Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate leader.
Maduro was sworn in last month for a third term as Venezuela’s president, despite widespread rejection of the July 2024 election results by the opposition and the international community, including the U.S.
