Hon. Wale Raji, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Livestock Development, has vowed to transform Nigeria’s livestock sector and ensure poultry farmers receive delayed compensation.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the move follows the Federal Government’s failure to pay ₦498.7 million owed to 307 verified farmers affected by bird flu outbreaks between 2021 and 2023.

Speaking during a public hearing on six livestock-related bills at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, Raji said, “This hearing allows stakeholders to contribute insights that will strengthen livestock development, enhance productivity, and create jobs. At the same time, we are committed to fairness and transparency in compensating farmers who suffered losses due to bird flu.”
The bills under review aim to establish livestock colleges and research institutes nationwide, promoting veterinary training, animal production, and capacity building.

Representing the Ministry of Livestock Development, Dr. Adeniyi Adedoyin revealed that ₦3.16 billion had previously been paid to 1,055 farmers, but the latest batch remains unpaid due to funding gaps and the absence of a dedicated Animal Diseases Contingency or Emergency Fund. Only smallholder farmers with flocks under 3,000 birds are eligible for compensation, while commercial farms are expected to maintain insurance coverage.
Raji emphasised that the reforms align with the National Livestock Transformation Plan, aimed at modernising animal husbandry, improving veterinary services, and boosting productivity.
Among the bills is one by Hon. Bello Ka’oje to establish the Federal College of Animal Husbandry, Ka’oje, a specialised institution to promote innovation, breeding excellence, and job creation in the livestock sector.
Raji concluded, “Our goal is to reposition the livestock industry as a driver of food security, rural development, and economic resilience. We will ensure that affected farmers receive their compensation promptly and that emergency funds are established to prevent future delays.”
