Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has assured residents that his administration is prepared to conduct local government elections.
Eko Hot Blog reports that this statement was conveyed on Sunday, in a statement by the governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Tofa, following a stakeholder meeting with the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leadership at Africa House, Government House, Kano, on Friday.
Governor Yusuf emphasized his administration’s intention to hold the council polls in accordance with the Supreme Court’s judgment, which affirmed the financial autonomy of local governments as the third tier of government.
He reiterated his respect for the rule of law and dedication to financial prudence, accountability, and transparency across all levels of governance.
“I assure the conduct of free, fair, and credible local government elections,” Yusuf stated.
“I urge opposition parties to try their luck, as my administration will not interfere with the electoral process,” he added.

He highlighted that his administration allowed the previous local government executive councils to complete their tenures, respecting the rule of law despite internal pressures.
This decision was influenced by a commitment to accountability and the recent Supreme Court ruling.
The statement noted that preparations are underway by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct the council polls soon.
Yusuf assured that the NNPP would soon select candidates for the positions of chairmen, vice-chairmen, and councilors in the 44 local government areas.
“We shall run peaceful campaigns with the belief that the majority of Kano people will vote for NNPP,” Yusuf affirmed.
